→ 8.29 Brainstorming
As the project kicked off, Proud and I got together to brainstorm each of the words: play, place, unity, and belonging. How we approached this was we created mind maps for each of the words individually, and then taped it together to make connections across each of the words.
After the mind-mapping the terms, we then decided to note down the definitions, related words, and what they can or can’t be on our Figjam board (embedded below).

As such, here are some of the main takeaways we had for each of the words:
- Play
- is to engage in an activity for enjoyment and recreation
- for adults, can be a way to reconnect with their inner child
- for kids, can be a way to learn, grow, socialize, collaborate
- can evoke playfulness and lightheartedness
- though the purpose of play is to have fun, doesn’t mean you always have fun playing
- Place
- A space that can be either physical, digital or both, with defined boundaries (boundaries can be subjective)
- If you dig a hole in the ground, and if no object belongs inside it and it serves no purpose beyond its physical qualities, then it’s not a place (a space isn’t necessarily a space)
- a place can be owned and unowned, can have many or no purposes — however, it should have meaning for someone or something.
- a place can also exist within a place
- Unity
- More like a ‘state’ of forming/coming together
- Relates more to the state of things rather than from the self
- You can be a part of a unified sports team sharing the same goal (to win) but not feel like you belong in the group.
- Belonging
- Having an affinity for a place/situation
- A person can be a part of a unified group but not feel like they necessarily belong
- Sense of belonging is one directional, from yourself towards another person, group, situation
- e.g being in a friend group with shared interests, but don’t mesh well with the people
